GIRLS Basketball Programs Program One (Saturday Clinics) - Grades K - 6: This program is designed for fundamental development and some game play. All interested girls may participate. The K - 2 program starts in the fall and runs on Saturdays through early winter. Starting times will not conflict with other fall sports. The K - 2 programs are co-ed and is a combined effort between the NLGYBA and the Fast Break Club. The fundamental development program for girls in grades 3 - 6 will run Saturday mornings from late fall through midwinter. This level provides a fun level of learning without the pressures of game play. The NLGYBA encourages all girls to attend these sessions. Program Two (League Play) - Grades 5 - 6: This program starts to introduce competitive play with the emphasis on individual development as opposed to winning every game. There are no evaluations or cuts at this level. This level will allow the girls, with various skill levels, to play games and compete as a team. This format provides a supportive learning experience among the girls. Teams will compete in a league or scheduled games. This program is only available to girls in the public school system and home school, as the parochial schools offer league play. We support the parochial schools’ basketball programs, and thus are limiting this to only public school students. In doing so, we will prevent any possible interference or distractions from the already established parochial school teams. In the event that there is no team to play on at the parochial school, the school principal should contact the NLGYBA president for conformation, which then would make play in Program Two possible. This level is available for girls in grades 5 - 6. The NLGYBA reserves the right to adjust and/or move players between Program Two and Program Three if necessary, due to the number of participants. Late sign-ups for Program Two (including parochial school girls) will be added at the discretion of the team coach. Girls are allowed to participant in Program Two and Three, with the levels being scheduled to avoid overlap. The 7th and 8th grade girls play their league season through the middle school program. Program Three (Traveling Tournament Teams) - Grades 3 - 8: This program is designed to provide competitive play for those girls who enjoy and have the skill to compete at a higher level. This program is more team focused than individually focused. Understanding your abilities and your role on the team is emphasized. The purpose of this program is to allow girls with similar skill levels to compete on the same team. This format provides a team building learning experience among the girls. This level will allow the girls to be competitive with other schools’ top teams. This team will be playing competitively in weekend tournaments in and around Northeast Wisconsin. While there are evaluations and placements for this program and possibly cuts for grades 7 - 8, it is our hope that we can field additional teams in the “Team A” and “Team B” format. This would help ensure that no girl would be eliminated from this level. Our ability to form two teams at a grade level will depend on the number of participants and available coaches. In addition to tournaments, a “B Team” may consider more scrimmages and possibly other game scheduling. The NLGYBA reserves the right to adjust and/or move players between Program Two and Program Three if needed, due to the number of participants. Program Two and Program Three coaches should communicate with each other in regard to games, tournaments, and when seasons end. Program Three will be scheduled to begin after Program Two’s season is completed, which would be around mid January. High
School Program - Grades 9 - 12: This program offers competitive
opportunities to high school girls outside of the normal basketball season.
These opportunities will vary and will be decided on by the present varsity
coach. This program is under the direct guidance of the varsity coach. Any
questions on this program should be directed to the varsity coach. Kindergarten through Grade 8 Program Level Descriptions Kindergarten through 2nd Grade Level - Fundamentals Clinic We hope to develop the basic basketball concepts at these beginning levels. Our main focus at this level will be to introduce the fundamentals of the game of basketball in a fun and enjoyable environment. The Saturday fundamental clinic will begin in the fall and run through early winter. K - 2 players will practice with small basketballs and 8-9 foot baskets. This program is coordinated with the boys Fast Break Club and therefore will be co-ed. 3rd Grade Level We hope to reinforce the concepts and fundamentals learned during the K - 2 Fundamental Clinic. Our objective in grade three is to increase the level of play and try to increase the intensity during actual game and/or tournament competition, while still providing a fun environment. We hope to make this enjoyable for each participant. The main goal in the younger grades is to get the players involved in basketball and to teach the fundamentals of the game. 3rd grade players will have two opportunities to participate. 1. Program One - Saturday Morning Clinic 40 minutes of fundamental drills and 20 minutes of game competition. Each girl will be placed on a team, coached by a varsity basketball player, and play other teams throughout the program on a rotating basis. 2. Program Three - Traveling Tournament Team Each player who joins will have an opportunity to play in every game, if the player gives full effort and is willing to learn and listen to her coach. The NLGYBA does not guarantee equal playing time for each player in Program Three. Coaches will do their best to provide fair playing time for each girl involved. Along with focusing on teaching the fundamentals, tournament teams will also focus on fair competition, good sportsmanship, and team success. There is a no cut policy for this grade level, so no player will be eliminated from Program Three. If we have enough players and coaches, we will have two teams. There will be two practices a week for each team and it is recommended that the team participate in 3 - 5 tournaments. Coaches will evaluate players week to week on talent, practice time, effort, work ethic, and academic satisfaction. Program Three focuses on both the team and the individual. 4th Grade Level We hope to reinforce the concepts and skills learned during Grade 3. Our objective in Grade 4 is to increase the level of play and try to increase the intensity during actual game and/or tournament competition, while still providing a fun environment. We hope to make this enjoyable for each participant. The main goal in the younger grades is to get the players involved in basketball and teach the fundamentals of the game. 4th grade players will have two opportunities to participate. There will be two practices a week for each team and it is recommended that the team participate in 4 - 6 tournaments. Coaches will evaluate players week to week on talent, practice time, effort, work ethic, and academic satisfaction. Program Three focuses on both the team and the individual. 5th Grade Level We hope to reinforce the concepts and fundamentals learned during 4th grade. Our objective in 5th grade is to increase the level of play and try to increase the intensity during actual game and/or tournament competition, while still providing a fun environment. We hope to make this enjoyable for each participant. The main goal in the younger grades is to get the players involved in basketball and teach the fundamentals of the game. 5th grade players will have three opportunities
1.
Program One - Saturday Morning Clinic Each girl will be placed on a team, coached by a varsity basketball player, and play other teams throughout the program on a rotating basis. 2. Program 2 - League Play Our goal in Program Two is to provide an atmosphere that is less competitive then Program Three, as far as game competition. Games will be scheduled by the coach against other community league teams. Program Two teams will participate in the Heart of the Valley League, and no league standing will be kept. When games are played is dependent upon gym availability. In Program Two, every effort will be made to have equal playing time, although it cannot be guaranteed. Also, Program Two allows different levels of skilled players to play together. Program Two is more individual focused than team focused. 3. However, there will be evaluations to determine a core group of eight players. The core group of players will travel to every tournament and the remaining players will rotate tournaments throughout the season. If we have enough players and coaches, we will have two teams. There will be two practices a week for each team and it is recommended that the team participate in 5 - 7 tournaments. Coaches will evaluate players week to week on talent, practice time, effort, work ethic, and academic satisfaction to determine the core group and playing time. Program Three focuses on both the team and the individual. 6th Grade Level We hope to reinforce the concepts and fundamentals learned during 5th grade. Our objective in 6th grade is to increase the level of play and try to increase the intensity during actual game and/or tournament competition, while still providing a fun environment. We hope to make this enjoyable for each participant. The main goal in the younger grades is to get the players involved in basketball and teach the fundamentals of the game. 6th grade players will have three opportunities 1. Program One - Saturday Morning Clinic 40 minutes of fundamental drills and 20 minutes of game competition. Each girl will be placed on a team, coached by a varsity basketball player, and play other teams throughout the program on a rotating basis. 2. Program Three focuses on both the team and the individual. 7th Grade Level 7th grade players will have one opportunity to participate. 1. Program Three - Traveling Tournament Team We hope to reinforce the concepts and the fundamentals learned at the 6th grade level and increase the intensity during competition. Our objective in 7th grade is to increase the level of play and competitiveness in practices and games. Our focus is to start preparing the girls for the high school program. Offensive and defensive preparation will mirror the philosophy of the high school program, as best it can. It will still be the philosophy of the association to enjoy the game of basketball. In 7th grade, playing time will be decided by the coach and may not always be equal. Coaches will do their best to provide fair playing time for each girl involved. Coaches will evaluate players week to week on talent, practice time, effort, work ethic, and academic satisfaction. Players, not parents, should consult with the coach about playing time and the efforts and improvements needed to gain more playing time. Players accepting and willing to play the roles given to them will have a better chance of playing more. We will keep 8 -10 players on a team. The association will have more than one team when numbers dictate the need for more teams and coaches can be secured for another team. In the case of high numbers, the association and coaches may have an evaluation to determine the teams, in an effort to put competitive teams together. There will be two practices a week for each team and it is recommended that the team participate in 5 - 8 tournaments. Program Three focuses on both the team and individual. NO PRACTICES OR GAMES WILL BE SCHEDULED DURING THE 7TH GRADE MIDDLE SCHOOL SEASON. 8th Grade Level 8th grade players will have one opportunity to participate. 1.
